Bart left the building via the fire exit and halted. Dan waited for him in the glow of the wall-mounted light. He stood close to the cover leading to the underneath. A gang hovered in the road near the end of the alley. “Fucking vultures.”

“Huh?” Dan said.

Bart flicked his head in the gang’s direction. “That lot up there. Why are you here?”

“I …” Dan looked at the ground. “I wanted to wait for you. Safety in numbers and all that. I didn’t want you walking home on your own.”

The gang comprised a roughly even mix of boys and girls. Young men and women. No younger than fourteen and no older than twenty. When you passed that age, you didn’t walk the streets anymore. You’d built up too much of a reputation. The streets were dangerous at the best of times, let alone when you’d made a list of enemies as long as the queue to get into Spider Pharmaceuticals. They might have watched Bart, held him with lingering glares, but they all peeled away at his approach and folded back into the shadows where they belonged.

“Wow,” Dan said, “and there’s me thinking my presence would somehow make your trip home safer.”

Had he only waited because he knew being with Bart would be safer? Getting all the benefits of Kaplan’s protection with none of the downsides? And had he ratted him out for his strange behaviour? But if he had, surely they wouldn’t have let Bart do the trials. Whatever had happened between them over the past few days, they were friends. And he more than owed Dan for all the times he’d looked out for him. At least he could repay the favour. Maybe they needed to rebuild bridges. Maybe they needed to walk home together.
